Four Questions with...
Ed Bailey
(Five Time All Star Catcher)

Check the bottom of this page for the other "Four Questions"

Ed Bailey was a catcher in the Major Leagues from 1952 to 1966. During his career he hit 155 Home Runs with 540 RBI. His two best years were 1956 (20 HR, 75 RBI and a .300 BA) and 1963 (21 HR, 68 RBI and a .263 BA). Mr. Bailey was also a Five-Time All-Star.
Recently, I asked him some questions about his career. These questions were asked, and answered, over the phone. However, Mr. Bailey did let me tape his answers. That tape is saved in the nBo Baseball archive.

Joe's Question #1: I want to ask about two of the best games of your career. Here's the first one: On June 24th 1956, you hit three Home Runs against the Dodgers. What was that game like for you?

Mr. Bailey's Answer: Well it was definitely one of my better games. It's quite a thrill anytime you hit, well it's the only time I ever hit three, but anytime you hit two Home Runs it's a pretty good day.
It was a great day. I enjoyed it. I have a lot of great memories from it.

Joe's Question #2: On July 22nd, 1965 you hit a Grand Slam for the Cubs and had eight RBI in a victory over the Phillies at Wrigley Field. What was that amazing game like for you?

Mr. Bailey's Answer: I'll tell you something about that game. The day after that I got hit on the hand and I was hurt again.
I had a grand slam, a three run home run and then I singled in a run. I think I had four hits if I'm not mistaken. That was quite a day really.

Joe's Question #3: In 1962 you played for the San Francisco Giants in the World Series. While you only had one hit it was a Home Run. Can you tell me about that home run?

Mr. Bailey's Answer: I had a long lean World Series really but I hit some balls hard. I made a star out of Maris a couple of times in right field.
Yeah that a good memory, hitting a home run in the World Series. It's a good one.

Joe's Question #4: You were an incredibly consistent player during your career. (Not to mention that you were one of the best catchers of your time). Also during your career you were a Five time All-Star (1956, 57, 60, 61 and 63). What are some of the things about your great career that you look back on with the most pride?

Mr. Bailey's Answer: I think probably durability. I caught 17 years, pretty much, minor and major leagues plus the army and two years in winter ball. Never once did I go on the disabled list. That's pretty strong for a catcher.
You know that when I went to Tulsa (minor leagues) they had a 154 game schedule and I caught 152 that year. My first year (of minor league baseball) I went to Ogden Utah it was a 126 game schedule and I caught 124 out there.
Sometimes I wish I hadn't played. One time I took myself out of a ballgame, that was in Pittsburgh. I told Alvin Dark I couldn't go it was the second game of a double header. I had three collisions at home plate in the same inning (of the first game). As it turned out, the next day was an off day and we went to Chicago from Pittsburgh. I went to the hospital the next morning and I had a dislocated hip. That was the only time I told the manager I couldn't play.
I guess the biggest thrill I had as far as All-Stars go was I broke Roy Campanella's string. He was there seven or eight years in a row and I was fortunate enough to have broken that string.
