Joe's Question #1.
You have one of the best autograph collector sites on the
Internet (Mac Maroon's Autographs). Why did you decide to make a web
site dedicated to autograph collecting?
I never really decided to have an autograph web site, it just
happened. When I first logged on to the Internet, I was amazed at the
amount of information that was available. I wanted to be a part of it,
so I set up numerous web sites, including one that displayed my hockey
autographs. Since then, the web site has grown to include autographs
from different sports, as well as some information for autograph
collectors. I never really thought it would become as popular as it is,
I'm just glad people like it!
What are some of your favorite sports autographs in your
collection and who are some of your favorite players?
That's a good question! I have so many that are my favorite, it is
very hard to pick just one or two. There are those autographs that I
have received from players that I like, and there are those autographs
that I got from players who's signatures I liked (because of fantastic
penmanship). I guess my favorite autograph is the personalized index
card from former Boston Bruins defenseman Bobby Orr. He was my idol
growing up and getting his autograph was very special. Some of my other
favorite autographs include index cards signed by Martin Brodeur (New
Jersey Devils), Carlos Delgado (Toronto Blue Jays), Rik Smits (Indiana
Pacers - the only NBA player who has signed my index cards), and a
signed photo with signatures from three former Winnipeg Jets (Teemu
Selanne, Randy Carlyle, and Phil Housley - all were obtained amazingly
through the mail).
Why and when did you start your autograph collection?
When I was a kid, I never really collected autographs. Sometimes a
local hockey player would appear at the shopping center down the street,
so I would go and get some cards signed. It wasn't until around 1990 or
so that I started to seriously collect autographs. Around that time,
one of my friends was showing me his autograph collection. It was very
impressive, he had autographs from baseball and football, but mostly
hockey. I asked him how he got all of them signed, and he said through
the mail. I was quite surprised that athletes would take the time to
sign cards for their fans, and my friend's collection proved that. He
suggested that I should write to some players that I liked, as he put
it, it was lots of fun to see who's signature is going to arrive in the
mailbox next. Well, I took his advice, and he was right! It was very
exciting when I received my first autograph in the mail, and I have been
looking forward to opening my mailbox ever since!
Which players that you haven't seen in person, would you
like to meet the most and why?
Another good question! I am actually a very shy person, so I don't
think I could get enough courage to meet anyone. However, if I had to
meet someone, I probably would like to meet the legendary Boston Bruins
defenseman Bobby Orr. I used to play hockey when I was a kid, and I was
also a defenseman. I had dreams of playing in the NHL and wanted to be
just like "Number Four - Bobby Orr". He revolutionized the way
defensemen played the game, he was both a defensive player and an
offensive threat. It was a shame that his career ended so early, but he
will always be remembered by the "kid" in me, as being one of the greats
of the game.
