Mr. Roberts Answer: Great season! We worked hard and we were also fortunate. Curt Simmons was called into the National Guard so we missed him. All in all it was the finest memory I had in baseball.
Joe's Question #2: In 1952 you had one of the best seasons any pitcher has ever had. You won 28 games, Completed 30 games, pitched 330 innings, struck out 148, an ERA of 2.59 and you finished second in the NL MVP voting. What was that amazing season like for you?
Mr. Roberts Answer: I was sorry I didn't win the MVP award. The Phillies team played great behind me - I was 21 and 2 the last 23 games.
Joe's Question #3: Which one of your great accomplishments on the field during your career, (286 wins, 305 complete games, 2357 strike outs or being a seven time All-Star) are you the most proud of?
Mr. Roberts Answer: I am most proud of being elected into the Hall of Fame.
Joe's Question #4: When you found out that you were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976, what was that moment, or day, like for you?
Mr. Roberts Answer: I was voted in on my sixth try - when I was told I reflected back on all the people who had helped me and how much I enjoyed being a Major League Player.
Joe's Question #1: In 1950 you lead the Philadelphia Phillies Whiz Kids to the World Series. What was that great season like for you, the rest of the Phillies and the city of Philadelphia?
Joe's Question #5: You started your career in 1948. What is more memorable for you from that first season, winning your first game or hitting your first home?
Mr. Roberts Answer: Winning my first game which was my second start. The home runs were great but I didn't hit enough of them.
Joe's Question #6: You started the five All-Star games, (1950, 51, 53, 54 and 55) that you pitched in. What is it like to be the starting pitcher in an All-Star game and does it get easier (or do you get more comfortable) the more All-Star games you pitch in?
Mr. Roberts Answer: To start the All Star game is a great honor - every time. I pitched good in three and bad in two, but the National League won all 5 of them.
Joe's Question #7: What are some of the most memorable moments of you baseball career?
Mr. Roberts Answer: Election into the hall of fame and winning the pennant in 1950 are the two most memorable moments of my baseball career.
