(Three Players Answer Questions about Baseball Autograph Collecting)

Virgil Trucks Answer: Twenty to thirty. I just got about five today. I've already sat down and answered them. Some of them I'll send a little note back to them and wish them well in their collection and that sort of thing. And some have returned thank you notes to me for signing for them. That's real nice. I've got the time to do it so I don't mind doing it.
I still get a lot of mail that the kids send and I sign them and send them back. I don't charge them anything.
Joe's Question #2: What kind of items do baseball fans send for you to sign?
Virgil Trucks Answer: Most of them don't have a lot of photos so they send you know those bubble gum cards. And they'll send the small index cards. Whatever they send, I'll sign.
Joe's Question #3: It's been a while since your playing career ended. How do you feel about the autograph requests that you still get through the mail?
Virgil Trucks Answer: The only thing I can say is that I probably answer more than the players do today. They probably don't answer many autographs. I guess there's one reason why I get as much mail as I do, for the simple reason that I don't charge anything. If they do want to give something I have them donate it to the Kidney Foundation. That's my number one charity. And I just say if you want to donate something make a check to them, not to me, send it to me and I'll forward it on to them.
Joe's Question #1: About how many autograph requests to you get in an average week?
Steve Barber's Answer: It seems like I average close to two or three pieces a week. It shocks me to be honest with you.
Frank Thomas's Answer: Probably anywhere from 25 to 35.
Steve Barber's Answer: Essentially it's an occasional baseball, but for the most part either they manage to come up with the old bubble gum cards or just three by five cards.
Frank Thomas's Answer: Well, they send baseballs, they send big pictures, they send articles and they send baseball cards.
Steve Barber's Answer: I don't real have an opinion on that other than amazement that people still want them. But on the other side of the coin I think because, for the most part, we're from the old school and we'll sign them for nothing. And that might be why they send them to us, I don't know.
I don't have any problem signing fan mail. If there's anything I object to, because of my aversion to writing it, when they kind of ask a bunch of questions and want a book back in return. But for simple autographs, I have no qualms with that what so ever.
Frank Thomas's Answer: I think it's great. In other words, I always say when people stop asking that's the time that you should worry.
I enjoy it; I enjoy writing to people. I answer every letter I get. And that I thank everybody that sends me cards.
