Question: Who were some of your favorite baseball players when you were either playing or as a kid and who were your role-models? joeg@nbobaseball.com

Answer: Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Whitey Ford and Sandy Koufax. Two center fielders and two left-handed pitchers. When I didn't pitch I played center field. As far as role-models my father was my biggest role-model growing up. He worked in a steel mill for 20 years, but he provided for six kids and a wife. He was a workaholic. He worked himself to death. My role model as an athlete - Muhammad Ali for standing up for his rights when he was called for the Selective Service because of his religious beliefs. I have a lot of respect for him, to this day.
